Dunmow win by 62 runs

After 4 straight wins, Dunmow travelled to Colchester to face Copford, a ground well known for its famous tree on the pitch. With an early start time of 12pm for a 40 over game allowing for a longer tea break to watch England v Sweden, skipper Ryan Johnson won the toss & decided to have a bat again.

The opening pair of Johnson & Glen-Doepel started well again as both continued their fine form this season at the top of the order scoring freely & punishing the open bowlers every time they missed their mark. Both batsmen punished the fast bowlers as there was very little in the pitch and they both raced to their half centuries. However the introduction of spin did the trick as Glen-Doepel was bowled for 56, bringing Cooper to the crease on his return to 2nd team cricket but he didn’t last long as he was cleaned up by the left arm Monks without troubling the scorers. Wickets tumbled to the spin as Brown (2) & Sedman (8) fell but Johnson continued to score at the other end. Johnson had partnerships with McLaughlin (19) & Callingham (17) who both fell to the spin of Soteriou as he completed his 5-fer. Once again like last week Johnson continued batting & racking up the score as Dunmow progressed towards 200. Swanston was next to fall as he dabbed through to the keeper for 7 followed by Rix who was cleaned bowled for a duck. Johnson was progressing towards back to back to centuries however there were big shouts of jug avoidance from the pavilion as on 99, Johnson hit the ball straight to cover and was run out, one short of a 2nd century. Another excellent innings from the skipper, leading from the front as he top scored again with the bat. The last pair Lewis & Smyth added valuable runs before Lewis fell LBW for 5. Dunmow finished on 236 off 39 overs.

Tea was taken as both teams sat down to watch England play Sweden. Once England had finished their 2-0 win, it was over to Dunmow to bring home the 20 points as they went about bowling Copford out.

Dunmow got off to a flyer as Lewis dismissed Monks for 5 with a full toss as he picked out Sedman at mid on. From the other end, McLaughlin took 3 early wickets removing Samaranayake, Crewe-Read & Lawson cheaply as Copford found themselves 4 down in the first 12 overs. However, Soteriou found form with the bat as he scored freely from one end but wasn’t being backed up as runs dried up from the other end. As Rix dismissed Crouch for 10 & Callingham got Lennox for 0, Soteriou continued to score and he raced past 50 as Smyth removed Humm for 4. Swanston came on for his first bowl of the season and his first ball rolled past the batsmen feet on the 8th bounce however he got the big wicket of Soteriou as he was caught & bowled for an excellent 93 which was followed by Soteriou commenting “I can’t believe I got out to your worst bowler” but this didn’t faze Swanston as he removed Monks again caught & bowled for just 2. It was over to Smyth to finish the innings as he bowled Bullen for 13, leaving Copford 62 runs short of Dunmows target. Wickets all round as the bowlers finished with McLaughlin 3-34, Smyth 2-10, Swanston 2-32, Rix 1-19, Lewis 1-32 & Callingham 1-35.

What a day as both Dunmow teams bought home the wins aswell as England progressing to a world cup semi-final. The 2nd XI collected 20 points as Johnson starred with the bat again followed by his bowlers taking all 10 wickets. Next week, Dunmow welcome Ipswich & East Suffolk 2nd XI to St Edmunds Lane.
