Match report Match report for Dunmow Cricket Club 2st XI vs Colchester Cavaliers
Played at St Edmunds Lane, Dunmow, Saturday 30th June 2018

Dunmow 237-9
Colchester Cavaliers 222 all out

Dunmow win by 15 runs

After 3 wins in a row, Dunmow welcomed Colchester Cavaliers to St Edmunds Lane. On a another glorious day with the sun shining, skipper Ryan Johnson won the toss again & after scoring 256, 285 & 324 in the previous weeks, there was no hesitation in batting first.

It was Max Glen-Doepel back at the top of the order with Johnson. Dunmow got off to a flyer again with the ball racing across the fast outfield. Glen-Doepel was first to fall as he was caught behind for 15 & it wasn’t long before Cameron Gibson was following him back for 13, leaving Dunmow 62-2 off the first 10 overs. The introduction of spin started to cause problems for the Dunmow batsmen. Bush was the first to fall victim to the spin as he departed for just 11 with Dunmow 92-3 now. Will Pascoe joined Johnson & the pair started to build a partnership as runs flowed off the pace bowling with the batsmen more cautious against the spin. The fourth wicket partnership was building as both Johnson & Pascoe punished the bad balls to the boundary & ran well between the wickets. However when Pascoe was bowled for 27, it sparked a collapse as McLaughlin was run out for 0, followed by batsmen gifting their wickets to the spin bowling as Vinay Menon, Rohan Aswani & Matt Takle all fell in the space of 8 runs, leaving Dunmow 181-8. Johnson continued to bat excellently from one end as the others fell around him. With Alex Rix for support, Dunmow pushed towards 200. Johnson bought up his century not long after as he continued unbeaten with excellent judgement of putting the bad balls away to the boundary & accumulating runs between the wickets. Ninth wicket partnership progressed well with Rix supporting Johnson till Rix departed in the last over for 15. Dunmow finished 237-9 with Johnson carrying his bat for 134*.

Cavaliers got off to a flyer in their innings as they scored quickly in the opening overs, taking full advantage of the quick outfield. McLaughlin got the breakthrough as he dismissed Dellar & Gedi, both bowled in quick succession to halt progression. Despite these two blows, Cavaliers built a 3rd wicket partnership of 49 but Rix got the danger man Murtaza as he ran past a ball only to turn round & see the bails taken off by Bush with the score 101-3. Cavaliers were scoring at a quicker rate than Dunmow so it was vital when Rix got Hussain & Aswani bowled Kannan, leaving Cavs 5 down but over halfway to the required score. The game was in the balance. It took an excellent catch from W Pascoe off Rix to dismiss Prabhu after he looked dangerous dispatching two balls over the rope. McLaughlin took the 7th wicket as he bowled Davidson but Cavs 8th wicket partnership of Rasheed & Johnson had other ideas as they ticked the score over, creeping ever closer to the target. The introduction of Gibson got Rasheed first ball as he swept the ball in the air to Glen-Doepel on the boundary. Riaz joined Johnson as they took the score past 200, with plenty of overs left. W Pascoe got his reward with the ball when he bowled Johnson with the score on 214. So the equation was simple, Cavs needed 24 to win only needed one wicket left in hand. The runs ticked over with singles coming to Riaz however Gibson was to take the final wicket as Riaz was caught behind with Cavs 15 short of the target set. The wickets were shared as Rix & McLaughlin took 3 each, Gibson took 2 & there was one each for W Pascoe & Aswani.

An excellent game of cricket with the stand out performance coming from the skipper Ryan Johnson as he carried his bat for the full 45 overs scoring 134 not out which helped Dunmow to the winning score of 237 on the day. Although they left it late, the bowlers delivered again taking all 10 wickets completing another 20 point win.
