Dunmow win by 126 runs

After a comfortable victory last week against Eye & District, Dunmow were looking to record back to back wins. Colchester won the toss & decided to bowl. Dunmow’s innings started well with Max Glen-Doepel & Ryan Johnson building another good partnership at the top of the order. They put pressure on fielders with quick running & punished any loose deliveries away to the boundary on a fast outfield. However, Dunmow lost both Glen-Doepel (30) & Johnson (20) with the score on 62 bringing Cameron Gibson & Andy Brown to the middle. The pair started to put pressure on after the platform had been well set by the openers. When Brown was dismissed for 23, Dunmow were 97-3 as Will Pascoe joined Gibson in the middle. The pair batted excellently in the middle overs with both batsmen scoring freely, boundaries came regularly. With the partnership growing, Gibson bought up his 50, his first for the second XI. Gibson fell straight after, edging through to the keeper. Jamie McLaughlin joined Pascoe at the crease & the pair started to push on as Dunmow raced past 200, followed by Pascoe bringing up his 50 with a boundary. With the score on 210-4, Colchester grabbed two quick wickets with Pascoe departing for an excellent 53 & M Callingham for 0, leaving Dunmow 211-6 with McLaughlin & Callingham at crease for the last 10. Both batsmen took full advantage of any poor deliveries & scored quickly as Dunmow racked up another 74 runs off the last 60 balls with McLaughlin finishing 43*, P Callingham fell in the last over for 26 & Alex Rix 1*. Dunmow posted 285-7 which was built around the top 6 batsmen all scoring 20+ but especially Gibson & Pascoe who built a 90 run partnership in the middle overs & both scoring half centuries.

Cavaliers got off to a flyer as they raced to 34 off the first 4 overs. It all changed when McLaughlin removed Gilhooly (20) & Ahamed (0) in the 5th over followed by Vinter (9) in the 7th over, leaving Cavaliers 38-3. Cavaliers looked to rebuild their innings; however wickets fell at regular intervals with pressure being built from all the bowlers. Callingham grabbed the next two, dismissing Rasheed (3) & Corcos (4), getting his reward for bowling tight lines. The wickets continued to fall as Rix claimed Kannan (21) & Davidson (2) with Kyle Johnson bowling excellently from the other end and removing Johnson for 1. Despite all these wickets falling captain Dellar continued to frustrate the Dunmow bowlers as he kept the score ticking over. A mix up between the batsmen lead to the 9th wicket, as Riaz was run out. Young joined Dellar in the middle as Dunmow looked to gain the vital 10th wicket for a 20 point win. However, the batsmen looked set to deny Dunmow as they kept the score ticking along but did not offer any chances. It was the return of Callingham & McLaughlin to the attack in the closing overs which started to create chances as more balls went past the outside edge & in the air but it didn’t seem to be Dunmow’s day as all fell safe. McLaughlin managed to gain the 10th wicket in the last over as Dellar was caught by Rix for 65. Cavaliers finished on 159 all out. The bowlers finished with McLaughlin 4-50 off 12.2, Rix 2-22 off 8, Callingham 2-25 off 12, K Johnson 1-11 off 6, Gibson 0-12 off 2 & A Pascoe 0-37 off 4.

It was an excellent all round team performance with everyone contributing. Next week, Dunmow look to make it 3 wins in a row as they host Copford 2nd XI at home.
