Match report Match report for Dunmow Cricket Club 2st XI vs Halstead 3rd XI
Played at Star Stile, Halstead, Saturday 2nd June 2018

Halstead 221-5
Dunmow 142 all out

Halstead win by 79 runs

Dunmow had 4 changes to the XI that beat Sudbury last week. Going into the game against Halstead, it was a bit of an unknown with Halstead only playing 1 game due to cancelations however they had beaten Bardwell the only team to beat Dunmow.

Dunmow won the toss & following the tradition of the season they fielded first. The ball was thrown to Jamie McLaughlin & last week’s fiver hero Louis Smyth; from the outset they caused the Halstead batsmen problems with the ball moving around. Smyth struck with the score on 8 as he cleaned up Dicker (1). As conditions improved with the sun coming out, Surridge & Nicholson started building a partnership for the 2nd wicket; it was the introduction of spin that broke the partnership, as Rohan Aswani had Nicholson caught on the boundary for 25. With that wicket falling, another two fell quickly as Martin Callingham got Surridge for 37 & Aswani got his second, dismissing Hawes without scoring. With Halstead now 77-4, Dunmow felt right in the game however S Rippingale & Cooper built a match winning partnership taking the game away from Dunmow as they ran well between the wickets & punished the bad balls away to the boundary. The partnership was worth 106 when McLaughlin broke it having Rippingale caught in the covers for 46 as they looked to push on. Cooper & Mallett batted well to close out the innings as they knocked the ball around, racking up the runs as Cooper finished 59* & Mallett 23*. Halstead closing 221-5 off the 45 overs & Dunmow bowlers finished with Aswani 2-35 off 7, Callingham 1-39 off 10, Smyth 1-50 off 9, McLaughlin 1-54 off 13, Rix 0-26 off 3 & Sampford 0-16 off 3.

Going into tea the score was about par on the pitch, however Dunmow’s fielding had given Halstead a lot of runs aswell as the bowlers conceding 23 wides.
Dunmow required 222 off 45 overs to win; Johnson decided to open with McLaughlin. However, McLaughlin was back in the pavilion for 0 with the score on 6. Ieuan Bush joined Johnson in the middle & the runs started to flow but as Bush started to get going he was dismissed by a sharp catch for 10. Johnson was looking good punishing the bad balls away to the boundary, on 29 he chipped one to mid wicket which saw him depart with the score on 48-3. Dunmow’s innings continued in the same vain as every time the partnership started to develop they lost wickets to halt the momentum. The middle order all made contributions but failed to progress on to the big score required when chasing 200+. With Baker (18), Takle (5), Aswani (18), Callingham (12) & Rix (12) all made the contributions but it was Cameron Gibson who held the innings together & batted excellently rotating the strike on regular bases picking the gaps in the field & finding the boundary when the bad ball came but he fell for 29 as he looked to up the rate. When Smyth was bowled for 0, it bought Dunmow’s innings to a close on 142.

In reflection, Dunmow’s fielding & extras count cost them as they gave away a lot of cheap runs which helped Halstead to posting a formidable 221 on the day. Dunmow take away 4 points & sit 3rd in the table, still in with a shout of promotion. Next week Dunmow 2nd XI host Eye & District.
