Dunmow maintained their fine form and racked up a 4th straight win against a valiant and persistent Haverhill side.

The home side won the toss and elected to bat on a dry and used surface. They were soon to regret the decision as Josh Rix had Fox LBW for 0 in the second over. The early pressure exerted by Rix and Matt Gibson claimed 3 additional wickets in the opening phase of the game to leave Haverhill reeling at 55-4 in the 19th over, both bowlers claiming 2 wickets apiece. Something of a recovery was started by Kettle (63), with first Archer (15) and then Sharpe (14), Baz Sewell taking some punishment but also claiming Archer as he attempted another big shot. Steve Hamlin claimed a wicket with his first ball as the vagaries of the pitch became more obvious and along with Rix in his second spell, they wrapped up the tail, Hamlin finishing with 2-21 from 8.4 overs and Rix 5-32 from 10.

Dunmow had seen the wicket become more unreliable and knew that they would have to bat well to win the game. Thankfully, in Joe Gallant they have one of the league’s form batsmen at the moment and he once again showed growing maturity and not a little skill in marshalling an effective run chase. While he made an untroubled 89*, only Mark Rosewell (37) really got to grips with the bowling and the surface and there were moments, especially 127-5 when the nerves were jangling in the away team ranks, but Gallant’s brilliance steered them home with 7 overs to spare. Wilkins claimed 3-53 and Davis 3-34 for the hosts.

Next week Dunmow travel to Brockley. Meanwhile Dunmow’s second XI moved top of Division 8 with a comprehensive victory against Copford. Batting first, Dunmow posted 324-6 (R Johnson 64, I Bush 59, W Pascoe 56, J McLaughlin 56) to which the visitors could only muster 156 all out in reply, K Johnson claimed 3-17.
