Played at Walsham le Willows, Saturday 9th June 2018

Dunmow 207-9
Walsham le Willows 73 all out

Dunmow win by 134 runs

Dunmow backed up last week’s excellent performance with another high quality team effort to defeat high flying Walsham le Willows.

Losing the toss (again) and being inserted did not look to be too much of a problem as Luke Swanston and Joe Gallant made easy work of the early bowling from the hosts, both being especially harsh on anything short. This continued to such an extent that the first wicket did not fall until the 28th over when Gallant was lbw for a very well made 74. Nick Kesingland (17) and Ollie Rooney (20) provided some support to Swanston, but after that the Dunmow innings fell away as the quality of the openers batting was further enhanced by the increasing unevenness of the pitch emerged, with three Dunmow batsmen falling for 0. Swanston was out in the final over for a patient 70 as Dunmow closed 207-9.

The Dunmow bowlers then backed up the efforts of the batsmen in magnificent fashion. Steve Hamlin immediately got the ball swinging to bowl Campbell, Newman (both for 0) and Waugh (15), all three bowled middle stump, and finish with figures of 8-3-17-3. Meanwhile, at the other end, Matt Gibson’s consistency was reaping rewards, aided by a pitch that was providing rewards for a patient approach. He claimed figures of 15-4-29-5, supported well by the catching of Kesingland, Rooney and Baz Sewell. It was then Sewell that applied the coup de grace by claiming the last two wickets with consecutive balls to dismiss the hosts within 30 overs and finish with figures of 6.5-1-25-2.

Next week Dunmow host Mistley, keen to continue their good form and rise up the table. Dunmow 2nd XI claimed a good win against Eye and District. Posting 256 the hosts were worried as Eye made 98 from the first 12 overs, but as the wickets fell, Dunmow re-established the pressure and bowl the 10 man visitors out for 175
