Eastons v Dunmow Cricket Club Sunday XI on Sun 17 Sep 2017 at 2:30pm
Match was Drawn
Match report
Two Cricketing Behemoths met on an overcast Sunday afternoon for a battle of epic proportions. On one side, a Eastons Team full of experienced campaigners (and a few ringers - ** you Joe Gallant). On the other, a youthful Dunmow Side looking to the future after a season to forget. Regular Sunday Skipper Alex 'Uber' Rix won the toss and stuck to the pre arranged tactic to bowl first and bat for the draw. The DCC XI took to the field with some of the team still struggling from the night before in the Flitch (#Whispers).
The opening pair for Eastons set the platform with a wide array of attacking shots, punishing the loose balls from the Dunmow bowlers. It was cult hero Henry Dickerson who made the breakthrough with the help of a quite simply stunning catch at 2nd slip from part time cricketer, full time handsome devil Matt Cooper, plucking the ball out of the air to the complete astonishment of the other 21 players participating. Another good catch followed with W.Pascoe diving to dismiss the pantomime villain Joe Gallant who batted well on a poor wicket.
The runs continued to tot up for the hosts though and even with the tight-ish bowling from Down and Menon earning them wickets, Eastons smashed their way to an impressive 212-6 by tea. A special mention to new 1st Team Seamer Jack Swanston who really did hit the deck hard. Tea was a solid affair with a number or good sweet and savoury options, a fair effort from GoldenArm.
The message was clear from skipper Rix at the interval, bat for the draw. However Dunmow did what Dunmow do and found themselves 15-3 and then 40-4 from the first 10 overs. The fight back came from an unlikely pairing as misfits Luke Swanston and Matt Cooper dug in to ensure that the game didn't end quickly. Through a mixture of luck, stubbornness and a pinch of skill. The pair took Dunmow from 3pm to 5:15pm when Cooper was finally bowled for a scrappy 38, 36 of those runs coming through the covers. Swanston continued to bore the bowlers and send the crowd to sleep with an astonishingly slow 25* from 26 overs at the crease. But the job had been done, ably assisted by big hitter Kesingland. Who was however in an extremely sedate mood having been put to sleep by Swantson and Coopers antics. He showed an application he had lacked all season leaving multiple Barnard deliveries before attempting to launch the Eastons skipper into the Gilberts front garden, with relative success. Whiz kid Menon however was required to face the final three deliveries, Dunmow crawled to a deserved draw. Scoring an impressively low 102-6 from 37 overs.
A thoroughly enjoyable day for all and a great way to end the season.
