High Roding v Dunmow Cricket Club Under 12's on Sun 05 Jun 2016 at 1030am
Dunmow Cricket Club Won by 5 runs
Match report
A nail biting finale, in which our Dunmow Under 12's showed huge maturity to hold their nerve saw them achieve a second successive away victory in the Peter Coe cup, defeating rivals High Roding by a narrow 5 run margin.
The home side won the toss and were eager to insert our boys on a green wicket, with overcast conditions and a damp outfield which made run scoring far from easy in the first half of the innings.
After losing Aryan (2) with the score on 13, Rosey (6) and Oscar (10) grafted hard and looked to be getting on top of some decent bowling when both managed to run themselves out with misjudged calls and Dunmow found themselves 45-3 with ten overs gone.
Alex knew he needed to steer the team to a competitive score and with William providing solid support they added 33 for the fourth wicket before the former was caught (by his cousin) for a well made 29.
At 78 for 4 in the 16th over the pressure was really on but Will ably supported by Ollie Nash (8) and then Jet (3) accumulated runs sensibly, accelerating towards the end to ensure a decent score of 126-7 and his own highest score, an undefeated 23.
It had the feel of being a game that could be very close with High Roding needing to score at 5 an over and Dunmow knowing they needed to make the batters work hard to do so.
Conditions had changed dramatically with the sun breaking through and the outfield far quicker than it had been when Dunmow batted and young Guy Morley-Jacob, who had bowled very well (2-12) set about the task confidently.
It was Ben Clarke who made the breakthrough in a terrific first over of left arm medium pace conceding just a single and clean bowling other opener Pitcher for 2 out of a first wicket stand of 30.
Despite some tidy bowling from Rosey, Harry Hall and Jet, Rankin and Morley-Jacob built solidly and seemed to be comfortably heading towards the target.
It was clear Dunmow needed to break the partnership or slow the scoring to change the momentum but despite Oscar having another over to try and do so they couldn't remove them and when two chances did eventually come the catches weren't taken and the game seemed to be drifting away from them.
However they hung in there and never let their heads go down, led by some terrific bowling from man of the match Will Harrison and some spirited and determined fielding from Harry.
With just 20 runs needed and almost five overs to get them, the terrific second wicket stand of 77 was finally broken when Aryan held on to a catch to remove Rankin for 24 to give William a deserved wicket.
Oscar then introduced Ollie Nash to the attack for over number 22 and from his very first ball Rosey took an excellent catch at square leg to end Morley-Jacob's outstanding knock of 54 and it was suddenly game on with 17 still needed from three overs, new batters at the crease and the visitors sensing they could turn it around.
The boys put us nervous adults to shame as they gave nothing away, showing real calmness under pressure.
Aryan with a couple of spot on accurate overs for only 6 conceded had led the way, William forced Roding's Charlie Law to sky one where Ollie Nash gleefully held on to the catch before Will superbly ran out Raeburn and Nash then bowled a quite superb final over.
With 9 needed for victory and the fielders buzzing, he was spot on accurate, conceding only 3 runs from the first five balls and then effecting a run out as the batsmen scrambled for two from the final ball to leave our boys ecstatically celebrating the win in the now warm sunshine.
Oscar showed great captaincy and decision making towards the end, supported by his team quite brilliantly who never gave up, showed great spirit and encouraged each other in a delightful manner, showing a great maturity for an inexperienced team at this level in how to manage and win a tight game of junior cricket.
It was a highly enjoyable experience. Thanks to all the parents and relatives for their enthusiasm and encouragement, to Ben Letch for the mobile burger restaurant and to our Chairman, Matt Gibson who umpired for us and we were delighted he got to witness the way our boys conducted themselves and did their club proud. Really well done all.
