Dunmow Cricket Club Second XI v Witham III on Sat 28 May 2016 at 1pm
Dunmow Cricket Club Won By 95 Runs
Match report
Dunmow made it 4 wins out of 4 on Saturday when they beat a strong Witham side to maintain their stronghold at the top of the division.
With a delayed start due to rain, Martin Callingham opted to have a bat when the game eventually got underway. For the top 4 batsman, it was a case of getting a start and then being dismissed. Ryan Johnson, Sam Bush, Ollie Bush and Tim Coupe then all made it into double figures before perishing, leaving Dunmow in some trouble at 68-4. That brought Callingham and Andy Brown to the crease as they looked to rebuild the innings. A mix of fluent drives and immense power saw both begin to score freely on a pitch that still had some offering for the bowlers. Both batsman went to much needed 50s but neither managed to get three figures, Brown making a well-crafted 62 and Callingham continuing his fine form with 82, both out caught as they looked to push the run rate. That left Dunmow in a really strong position going into the last 10. James Reid, Jamie McLaughlin and Max Glen-Doepel then provided the acceleration needed at the end of innings to propel Dunmow to 289.
The Witham innings started in similar fashion to the home sides'. They found themselves 55-4 after McLaughlin and Reid tore through the top order. Dunmow were then met with some great counter-attacking resistance with the 5th wicket partnership putting on 124 to swing the game back in the balance. Some aggressive hitting and intricate drives had Dunmow on the back foot. Yet as the pressure built on the batsman, Callingham managed to pierce the defences of Witham's no. 3, who departed for a well made 75. A much needed wicket for the home side. Soon after, Alex Rix accounted for his partner on 72 thanks to some excellent glove work from Brown. The left armer proved too much for the lower order, in tandem with Callingham. Witham were all out 194, Rix ending up with 4 wickets.
Dunmow return to league action on the 9th when they travel to Colchester Cavaliers in what promises to be an eagerly contested encounter with both teams battling at the top.
