Two Counties League Division 9 South
Played at Boxted, 14th May 2016.
Dunmow 280 - 7
Boxted 146 all out
Dunmow win by 134 runs

Looking to build on the back of their substantial victory over Kelvedon & Feering IIIs in the opening week of the season, DCC2s took to the road for the first time in the Two Counties league to take on Boxted.

Dunmow batted first, with opening pair Tom Peirson-McGeorge (28) and Ryan Johnson (18) getting them off to a confident start. Despite an unpredictable wicket, the runs continued to flow steadily, with Matt Cross playing himself in in his first outing of the campaign. Cross was unfortunate to be removed for 27 after watching the ball inexplicably roll down the back of his bat and onto his stumps, bringing Martin Callingham to the crease and sparking an acceleration of run scoring in the middle overs of the innings. The skipper was in no mood for hanging about, and with the equally car-park-jeopardising James Reid at the other end, Dunmow quickly passed the 250 mark. Callingham (39) eventually saw a delivery sneak underneath his blade and topple his bails, though Reid hardly gave a chance away throughout and finished on 95 not out, giving his side a commanding total of 280-7 from their 45 overs.

Any hopes of a repeat of Boxted’s meagre batting totals of 50 in their past two matches were soon quashed, with their opening duo of Green and Springett looking solid at the crease at the start of their innings. A persevering nine-over spell from George Gallant (13-28-3) eventually saw that partnership broken, before Callingham (9-35-1) removed the dangerous looking Wilson, who had made a quick-fire 23 in at number three. Jack Swanston then made short work of the middle order, putting the game beyond the home side. However, Boxted refused to go down without a fight, and it soon became clear that their game-plan was to deny Dunmow maximum points by not giving away all ten of their wickets. It was a tactic that almost paid off, and it wasn’t until Swanston – who finished with a jug-worthy five-wicket haul – was brought back on for the last over of the game that the final wicket fell, courtesy of an audacious snaffle by Alex Rix.
