Match report Match report for Dunmow 1st XI vs Lakenheath 1st XI
Two Counties League Division 2
Played at Lakenheath, June 11th 2016.
Lakenheath 206-9
Dunmow 208-4
Dunmow won by 6 wickets
After the lows of the last two weeks, Dunmow 1st XI made up for it with a magnificent team display against near league rivals Lakenheath.
On a worn, cracked wicket, Dunmow bowled first and once again, the bowlers put in solid performances, not aided by the very uneven outfield. Matt Gibson again claimed the first wicket, having Frankie Gammon caught at point for 29, but it was slower bowling that did the damage as first Baz Sewell (15-0-57-1) and more significantly, Nav Ali (14-2-58-5) stemmed the flow of runs and reaped the reward of wickets as frustration built in the batting side. Only Danny Rodic (31) was able to provide anything like meaningful support for opening batsman Dom Palmer who carried his bat for a well made 80 not out and with Steve Hamlin claiming 2-32 at the end of the innings, the honours seemed about even at tea.
The rain was very considerate and arrived during the interval, perhaps giving Dunmow a slight advantage as the home side would have to bowl with a wet ball. This did not initially seem to make any difference as Kesingland perished for 0 in the second over, bring Joe Gallant to the crease. In the first of two meaningful partnerships, he and Ali put on 56 for the second wicket before Ali was bowled by Rodic for 31. Luke Swanston came and went for a breezy 9 bring skipper Paul Reid to the crease with the score at 82-3 in the 19th over. He and Gallant batted superbly in tandem, increasingly taking on the Lakenheath fielders and putting away the bad ball. Despite this, the run rate continued to gradually rise, meaning that 72 runs were needed from the final 10 overs. The 7 an over run rate was sustained until 7 were needed from the final over and Reid was run out from the fourth ball, attempting a second run for a very well made 60. By this stage, Gallant was on 92 and with two balls remaining and 3 needed, he despatched Horrex to the deep midwicket boundary to secure a tense but important win and finish 96 not out to secure an important victory.
The 2nd XI retained their unbeaten status although their match was abandoned with Dunmow 26-2 in reply to Colchester Cavaliers 150 all out.
Next week Dunmow 1st XI host Elmstead Market while the 2nd XI travel to Maldon to play their 4th XI.
