Sign Up for Umpire Courses

18 Nov 2025

Dear all,

I hope you are well and not missing cricket too much (for those who are not still playing!).

In anticipation of next season we have arranged two certified cricket umpiring courses to be held at Dunmow cricket club from 7.00pm on the following dates:

Tuesday 20th January – Introduction to Umpiring

Tuesday 24th February – Umpire Development Course

The course outlines are:

Introduction to umpiring – this course lasts 1.5 hrs and is mainly for people with little experience or are new to cricket.  It covers:

  • Where to stand at Bowler’s and Striker’s End
  • Wides
  • No Balls (front foot, over waist height, over head height only)
  • Common Signals (4, 6, out, wide, no ball, bye, leg bye)
  • Main Methods of Dismissal (bowled, caught, run out, stumped, hit wicket)

Umpire Development Course – this course lasts 2 hrs and is aimed at people who have experience of cricket but would like to learn more about umpiring.  This is a standalone course and people do not need to have done the Introduction course first, but it is good development for those people who may have done the Introduction course and want to learn more.  It is also useful for players, who may have to do an umpiring stint when they play, when they don’t have independent umpires.  It covers:

  • Everything in the Introduction course, plus
  • Signalling (short run, revoking the last signal, dead ball, penalty runs)
  • No balls (ball bouncing more than once, ball rolling, limitation of leg side fielders; bowler breaking wicket in delivery stride; fielder encroaching; ball pitching off the pitch)
  • Methods of dismissal (LBW, run-out of the non-striker)
  • Counting balls in the over and signals to colleague around this

The guide is age 12+ for the Intro Course and 13+ for the Development Course.

There is then an ECB umpiring course booked for 28 March in Colchester, so anybody who is really keen could then sign up for that. :)

The trainer, Angela usually looks for a maximum of 20,  with a minimum of 12 people which we intend to offer out to Dunmow players/coaches first before going out to the wider community.

If you would be interested in attending either or both courses, please contact me at joanna.hayes@assuredhr.co.uk and I will book your spot.

As we will need to go out to other people if we don’t get the 12+ required people I will need to know numbers before Christmas so if you can please reply to me by 15 December 2025.

Thanks

Jo on behalf of DCC
