Match report
Match report for Dunmow Cricket Club 2st XI vs Sudbury 3rd XI
Played at St Edmunds Lane, Dunmow, Saturday 26th May 2018
Sudbury 127 all out
Dunmow 130-5
Dunmow won by 5 wickets
Dunmow bounced straight back to winning ways after their first loss of the season at Bardwell last week with a victory over Sudbury taking them back to the top of division 8.
For the fifth time in a row Dunmow took to the field first after Sudbury won the toss & decided to have a bat on a wicket that was slightly damp after heavy rain fall that morning. Skipper Ryan Johnson threw the ball to opening bowlers Jamie McLaughlin & Alfie Pascoe on a day where the rain had passed and now the sun was shining bright. Sudbury openers W Amos & Holness started defensively however punishing any loose deliveries to the boundaries. It was Pascoe who struck first pinning Holness in front for just 4 as he struggled to score. However Amos was starting to get his eye in & scoring more freely with Captain Butcher at the other end. The first change of bowling came with Pascoe being replaced by Louis Smyth which was an inspired change with the Skipper instantly rewarded with Smyth removing Butcher in this first over. McLaughlin & Smyth continued to cause problems for the batsmen & the runs started to dry up which was followed by Smyth removing Amos for 49 cleaned bowled. Johnson made a change of bowling with McLaughlin (10-2-18-0) being replaced by Vinay Menon who also started with a wicket in his first over removing Macdiarmid caught behind. Smyth & Menon both struck again removing Duncan & Halliday which had Sudbury reeling at 89-6. Once both Smyth & Menon (5-2-11-2) came to the end of their spells they were replaced by the spinners Alex Rix & Cameron Gibson who dried up the runs as the dot balls mounted & the spinners finished with combined figures of 9-3-14-1 as Johnson rotated his bowlers giving Cooper Baker & Kyle Johnson an over each as he chased all 10 wickets. With Sudbury 120-7, it was the return of Pascoe (9-0-40-2) & Smyth (8-2-37-5) who cleaned up the tail enders between them as they executed their skills to take the final 3 wickets for just 7 runs.
An excellent bowling performance led by 16 year old Louis Smyth taking a fiver.
Dunmow felt confident going into tea however they knew it wouldn’t be straight forward as the pitch still hadn’t fully dried out. Openers Menon & Johnson walked out chasing 128 to win in 47 overs. However the Dunmow innings got off to the worst possible start as Menon played a loose shot 2nd ball which saw him caught for 0. This was as good as it got for Sudbury for a long period as Ieuan Bush joined skipper Johnson in the middle as both batsmen waited for the bad ball & punished it aswell as rotating the strike with singles. As they played themselves in, the run rate started to increase with Dunmow going into drinks at 75-1. The partnership of Johnson & Bush took the game into Dunmow’s control. However Sudbury re grouped at drinks & came out fighting, firstly removing Bush for a well made 40, followed by skipper Johnson (32) & Max Glen-Doepel (3). Dunmow were suddenly 80-4 but still in control only requiring 48 to win, it was Gibson & McLaughlin next in & they carried the score to over 100 however Gibson perished for 8, bringing Baker to the crease who was in a hurry as he punished the bad balls finishing on 17* with 3 successive fours in the 25th over to finish the game with McLaughlin (20*) at the other end.
An excellent all round performance with Dunmow taking all 20 points & other results going their way the 2nd XI return to the top of division 8. Next week Dunmow 2nd XI travel to Halstead 3rd XI.
