Match report
Match report for Dunmow Cricket Club 1st XI vs Easton CC
Played at Easton, Saturday 20th April 2018
Easton 150-7
Dunmow 151-1
Dunmow won by 9 wickets
With no outside practice due to the vagaries of the April weather and adjusting to the reality of Division 3 after a painful relegation in 2017, Dunmow travelled to Easton in Suffolk for their first game of the 2018 season.
Skipper Luke Swanston won the toss and elected to field on a drying wicket. Consistent opening spells of bowling from Jamie McLaughlin and Matt Gibson (who missed the entire 2017 season due to illness) kept the Easton openers under pressure until Mclaughlin had opener Polley caught for 6 with the score at 20 in the 11th over. Pressure was maintained by Baz Sewell (8-1-34-0) and George Gallant (12-4-21-2) so that Easton’s progress remained slow. Only a partnership of 63 for the 4th wicket between Syer and Christopher gave impetus but when Christopher fell for 26, quickly followed by Sayer for 36, any momentum was sucked out of the final 8 overs, which only mustered 27 runs, during which Gibson also claimed his first wicket for 20 months to finish with figures of 11-0-26-1). Credit is also due to 17 year old Will Pascoe who claimed 2-26 from his 6 overs.
As the glorious weather continued to dry the wicket and the outfield, Dunmow were confident of chasing the total. This confidence perhaps looked misplaced when Joe Gallant was bowled for 4 at the end of the second over by Wayne Mitchell with the score only at 10. This was, however, as good as it got for the Easton bowlers, as skipper Swanston and Ollie Rooney built an unbroken partnership of 141 (Swanston 63*, Rooney 61*) to see the visitors home in the 35th over for a comprehensive victory and the best possible start to their bid for an instant return to Division 2. Next week, they host Long Melford at St Edmunds Lane, 12.30pm start.
